This is a wheel-thrown and beautifully designed for the alternative firing process known as RAKU.
The one-of-a-kind glaze finish happens on the second firing where the piece is removed from an open kiln at 1800° and immediately placed in a can with paper (which ignites) and then the can is sealed until cool.
The magic that takes place on the surface of the glaze is incredible. I love the complexities and variations that are achieved ----if it all comes together. Given the extreme treatment, not all make it to this level. That is why they are so special!
NOTE: Given the firing techniques, this piece is not food-safe or watertight.
